"G" Class Altitude Record
Who: Douglas Gamber
What: 7,672 feet
When: Oct. 27, 2002
Where: Whitakers, NC
Doug's "G" altitude attempt was made with a two-stage rocket, both stages using "F" engines. The photo at the bottom of the page tells much of the story, and here is Doug's own description of his "G" class record vehicle:
The rocket is constructed from modified fiber glass tubes, nose, and fins. The tubes weigh approximately one third of stock tubes.
It was boosted by an F25, and the booster contains a unique chrome (pancake) streamer. The upper stage contains an Adept ALTS 1 altimeter, a BlackSky Timer 1, a Walston transmitter, and a customized parachute.
Due to the weak boost of the F25, the rocket did not take a completely vertical trajectory, resulting in a one-plus mile away recovery.
This rocket is still very much alive, and Doug is debating whether to fly it again with an F50, or in modified form with an H70. The photo below shows the various parts, and you can see that it is quite a spiffy vehicle.
